Robomb

Robomb is a game where the player is put into a cyberpunk world and plays as the main character "Pipe Bomb John" or PBJ for short. PBJ has the ability to throw (yep you guessed it!) pipe bombs, to propel himself around the levels.

We worked collaboratively in a group of 4 on this project. This game was created with unreal engine, and was all of our first experience's with it.

My Role

My primary role in this project was to create a fun, yet simple to understand game mechanic to base our entire game around. My goal was to create something that got players wanting to play again and again. Essentially a low skill floor but high skill ceiling.

Responsibilities:

  • Gameplay mechanics
  • Implementing and interpreting playtester feedback
  • Project & Scope management

Technical Details

Working on the mechanics for the grenade was a constant and evolving feature unlike anything I had worked on before. It was vital to keep refining and improving on the mechanic as playtester feedback came in. But I also had to keep a careful balance as if I changed how the mechanics worked too much all the levels would need to be re-designed.

If you are interested in further insight on some of my design decisions and process I have timestamped the following video where I talk more in depth about my design goals for the main gameplay loop.
